Ensuring that your car tyres are road worthy is critical to your safety and the safety of other motorists, road users and pedestrians. Beyond the obvious safety issues your cars performance and the cost of running your car are all contributed to by your tyres.

Car tyres are often overlooked, we tend to pump them up from time to time and when servicing is due we might need one or two replaced. Some motorists don't even pump there tyres on a regular basis.

If your tyres are under inflated, your tyres over heat to quickly and wear more on the outer. If there over inflated, the steering can be effected. According to statistics more than 5% of fatal accidents in the UK are attributed to over or under inflated tyres.
Pumping up your cars tyres and ensuring that they remain at consistent levels will ensure that you save money on your petrol bills.

Driving with under inflated tyres increase the rolling resistance which in turn means the engine has to work harder to keep at the same pace, if the engine is working harder than more fuel is required. In the UK like many countries there are minimum standards for tyre inflation which can result in substantial fines if not adhered to. Tyres often need to have a minimum tread depth to be considered road worthy.

Tread depth legislation means that the tyre must have a certain amount of tread in a continuous band throughout a given percentage of the road facing part of the tyre. When a tyre reaches 3.5mm it has been proven that the cars ability to grip the road and perform especially in wet conditions begins to worsen.

If you check your tread depth from time to time you may be able to get some extra wear by exchanging worn tyres from the front with those on the back. This is common practice as the front tyres will often wear much faster than the rear. The same can be said if a car is not balanced correctly, tyres and in fact whole wheels can be swapped from left to right. This is only advised if there within good legal condition.

Tyres below the minimum tread depth as subject in some country's to penalties including fines and points which might mean higher insurance premiums in the future. Checking legal requirements in your Country or territory is recommended. It is worth keeping an eye on your tyres from a safety point of view mainly but also there is opportunity to save money and the environment if there managed correctly.
